Touring the West Coast / Weskus

The West Coast of South Africa or "Weskus" offers a rainbow of options for all kinds of interests. Many people visit the region to explore the National Parks and quaint little towns. Some prefer 4X4 Dune excursions and others prefer to sit and watch the waves breaking over the rim of a good book. If you like crowds, the West Coast is not your thing.

How far North does the Weskus go?

It depends who you ask. Most will say Alexander Bay

The Weskus is divided into many sub regions but can be narrowed down to 3 areas. The Cape West Coast (Yzerfontein to Lamberts Bay), the Namaqua Coast (Strandfontein to Alexanderbaai) and N7 (between the coast and the N7: Swartland, Cederberg, Clanwilliam, Vioolsdrift etc.)

How long does it take to tour the Weskus?

You can drive from Cape Town to Vioolsdrift in one day and see plenty but experience nothing. You can also tour for 20 days and still want to see more. Most people like to spend 10 days traveling either up or down the coast and visit the N7 Towns on the way back. Depending on their interests, they spend two or three nights in certain place and explore during the day.

Can I do the West Coast/Weskus in a car?

Yes. But....:)
Many coastal towns North of Elands Bay are connected via gravel roads. These roads are always changing from average to bad.
Rule no 1: Deflate your tyres up to ten counts on each tyre - it makes all the difference!.
Rule no 2: If you don't feel sorry for your car then the answer is YES! you can do the West Coast in a 2X4.

Traveling all along the Weskus, the only coastal area you will not be able to access with your 2X4 is the Namaqua National park, north of Vanrhynsdorp. Traveling from Koekenaap to Bitterfontein/Garies will take you to Hondeklipbaai, where you can access the coast all the way to the border of Namibia.

I only want to travel on tar roads:
You will be able to visit coastal towns like Lamberts Bay, Port Nolloth and Elandsbaai BUT you will have to travel back and forth to the N7 to reach the next coastal town.

Try to spend two or three days in the same town. This will not only help you to get better rates and availability but will also allow for exploring/relaxing time.

Plan ahead. School Holidays and Namaqua Flower Season (July to August) are very popular times. Many people reserve up to 1 year ahead.

There is plenty to do and see on the N7 so try to include these destinations in your Weskus Trip: Cederberg, Clanwilliam, Vredendal, Vioolsdrift,

December is big on the West Coast: Most place only take 7 night reservations during December. If you plan on touring the coast during this popular time, we recommend searching for units that are situated more inland.

How much does it cost to stay on the West Coast or Weskus?

Please Note: These are only averages

Self-catering unit for two people - R750 / R1100 for a sea view

Holiday Homes and family units up to 6 people - R1200 / R2000 for a sea view

Camping - R400

West Coast Flower Season - July-Aug

Namaqualand Flower Hunting tips

  • Keep yourself flexible - stay central for min. 3 nights and head out in the mornings, guided by the latest flower reports. Everything can change overnight.
  • Hug the Coast - more moisture, more flowers.
  • Manage your expectations -you are not flower watching - you are flower hunting. Sometimes you come home empty handed.
  • Keep the sun on your back - Flowers need and follow the sun.
